Things to Know About
Pop/Rock Piano Lessons for Adults Online

Do I need to know how to read sheet music?

Not at all. In pop and rock piano, reading sheet music isn’t the main focus — playing real songs is. I’ll show you how to use chord charts, patterns, and ear training to learn quickly and play confidently. Over time, you’ll naturally understand more theory and structure — but we’ll always keep the focus on making music, not memorizing notes.

Is there a certain skill level required to start?

Not necessarily. Some students are lifelong players who want to get better at improvising, while others are returning to the piano after years away. Lessons are personalized for your level, whether you’re new to pop/rock contemporary styles or looking to take your playing to the next stage.

What kind of music will I learn?

We’ll focus on the styles you actually enjoy — pop, rock, blues, and a little country or soul if that’s your thing. You’ll learn to play songs by your favorite artists, while also building real-world piano skills like grooves, fills, and chord voicings that make your playing sound professional.

How long does it take to see progress?

My hope is to get you sounding better almost right away — often within the first few lessons. The key is steady practice and applying what you learn between sessions. Everyone moves at a different pace, but if you’re consistent, you’ll notice major improvements in just a few months.

Do I need a full piano to take lessons?

No — either a simple 61-key, 76-key or 88-key keyboard is perfect.

How are lessons taught online?

All lessons take place live on Zoom. You’ll see my piano, I’ll see yours, and we’ll work together in real time. I demonstrate, you play, and I give instant feedback and tips. It’s interactive and fun — just like being in the same room.

What’s most important for success?

Consistency and a positive mindset. You don’t have to practice for hours a day — short, focused sessions go a long way. I’ll help you set realistic goals, stay motivated, and enjoy the process of improving week by week.

Things to Know About
Pop/Rock Piano Lessons for Adults Online

There is no specific age limit for starting piano lessons.

There isn't a fixed age for starting piano lessons, as every child develops differently. However, it is usually recommended that children begin piano instruction around the age of 5 or 6 as by this age children have usually developed the dexterity and focus required to start learning an instrument.

Additionally, it's important to take into account a child's enthusiasm and motivation in learning piano. If a child is keen to learn and can concentrate for short practice sessions, they might be ready to start piano lessons at a younger age.

Not being able to read sheet music is not a requirement to play the piano, there are other ways to learn and master the instrument.

Being able to read sheet music can be beneficial for pianists, but it is not an absolute requirement for learning piano. Some students may prefer to learn by listening or using chord charts and other materials that don't involve sheet music reading. However, learning to read sheet music can enhance a student's understanding of music and expand their repertoire. Many piano teachers will often teach sheet music reading alongside other piano-playing skills and it can be developed gradually as the student progresses.

The duration of learning to play the piano varies from person to person.

The time it takes to learn piano can differ among individuals. Some may learn the fundamentals, such as posture and hand positioning, in a few months while it might take others longer. With consistent practice and quality instruction, one can improve their piano playing skills over time. It may take some time to learn more challenging songs, but with dedication and practice, progress can be made.

Creating a consistent practice schedule and fostering a positive learning atmosphere in the home environment are key for piano success.

When parents are contemplating piano lessons for their children, it is crucial to ensure that the child is eager to learn and motivated. It's also essential to find an experienced and qualified piano teacher who can adapt the lessons to the child's unique needs and learning style. Furthermore, setting up a consistent practice schedule and providing a supportive and positive learning atmosphere at home are vital for success.

Piano instruction can provide students with knowledge on the proper positioning of the body and hands, finger techniques, scales, arpeggios, chord progressions, and the interpretation of sheet music.

During piano lessons, students will acquire a diverse set of technical and theoretical skills that are crucial to playing the piano. These skills include proper posture and hand positioning, finger exercises, scales, arpeggios, chord progressions and sheet music interpretation.

Additionally, students will work on pieces to enhance their performance skills, musical expression, and composition interpretation. The lessons may also include music theory, ear training, and sight-reading to enhance musical understanding and knowledge. The student's level, goals, and interests will shape the focus and pace of the lessons.

Musical talent is not a requirement for playing the piano.

You don't have to be naturally talented to learn how to play the piano. While some people may find it easier to pick up, others may have to work harder to improve. But with practice and determination, anyone can become proficient at playing the piano. A good piano teacher can guide and support you in developing your skills, regardless of your starting point.
